That's a really good post. I grew up a ND fan watching Lindsey Nelson
on Sunday mornings. I switched my allegiance when I attended Virginia Tech, but have always had a sweet spot for Notre Dame.
You nailed it, it's not about the money and even if it is about the money ND has been able overall to compete on the money side.
All of that said, College Football especially the FBS has many different needs. It's like running Joe's Burgers like McDonalds. They have different income streams and they have to navigate their businesses in an entirely different way. The split has already happened with TV contracts and Cost of Attendance. Can some G-5 hang, maybe if they get into a Power Conference, but not otherwise and most don't have the following to be in a Power Conference.
That will effect ND because the Presidents want teams in a conference so that the Conference Championship is the play in game. Now I understand that ND has a long tradition of Independence, but with a locked in 5 games with the ACC is it really independent? They have to have a national schedule, that is indisputable in my mind. However, if we go to 4 divisions in a conference of 4 or 5, that can still play USC-W, Stanford etc. and if it is win your matchup divisions and in, those loses will not kill their chances.
As far as the alumni, I think there will be some hurt feelings, but if that's the only way to the National Championship, most if not all of that will subside with time when they win their first conference championship. It sure was a shot in the arm of their basketball.
Again, the key here is that they have no choice to get to the National Championship, but be in a conference. [Post edited by Stech at 05/08/2017 07:10AM]
